After heavy rain in San Diego this week, we hiked to the summit of El Cajon Mountain to catch a glimpse of snow-dusted mountains just one range further east. With the air so clear, we could see north all the way to the towering Mt San Jacinto, and south-west to the Islas Coronado off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. It’s an unexpectedly difficult walk, with steep and relentless climbs and descents. For our efforts, we were rewarded not only with snow but also with the colorful autumn display of the coastal sage scrub, and a fiery sunset over the Pacific Ocean.
